Ancient Gnathia Epichysis ; Magna Graecia Pottery

Elegant epichysis from Egnazia Italy attributed to the Rose Painter, with reel-shaped body and high gloss finish. On the top portion of the body, a vine band of grape clusters, leaves and tendrils, dots, ovolo and ray pattern on the neck. All painted in classic Gnathian colours; red, yellow and white. On the handle, mold-made masks where the handle joins the rim. The inner body decorated with a finely painted dove framed by a dotted flower and wreath. Measures 6.5 inches in height. Dates to circa 340-320 BC.

Provenance: Ex. Gebhard and Johannes Hager. Exhibited at the Stadtmuseum Ottweiler.
